Does Midland Teen Court allow students to volunteer? Volunteer youth must have completed the sixth grade (7th grade through high school and Midland College Legacy Scholarship students). Youth earn volunteer hours by serving as teen jurors or teen attorneys and may use these hours to fulfill Texas Scholar and Midland College’s Legacy Scholarship requirements. Midland Teen Court keeps a record of all volunteer hours. Juniors and seniors are responsible for getting their Texas Scholar forms signed; seniors and Midland College Legacy students must have their Legacy Scholarship forms signed by an approved Teen Court employee. To fill out a volunteer application, click here or come to any Midland Teen Court session on Monday evenings. Teen juror interest- Youth volunteers begin service as a juror on any court date. All jurors must arrive at 5:00 p.m. to check-in on set court dates and must be dressed appropriately in neat, conservative clothes. As a juror, volunteers will hear testimony and deliberate to determine the constructive sentence for the defendant’s case.
Teen attorney interest- Following multiple evenings of jury service, youth 8th grade and above may request training to be a teen attorney. As a teen attorney, students will be prosecuting or defending non-traffic cases. Students must contact or meet with the Executive Director to express an interest in Teen Attorney training, held at the beginning of each semester and the start of the summer. Permission slips must be completed and signed by the youth and parents prior to the training. |
